What is the plot of Fast 9?
The ninth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise will see Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto turn on his family and team up with Charlize Theron’s Cipher, the villainous hacker first introduced in The Fate of the Furious. The film will be directed by Justin Lin, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth Fast movies.
“It’s going to be a big surprise,” Theron told EW of her role. “I think that’s what they’re going for.”
The Fate of the Furious ended with Dom (Diesel) betraying his team and Cipher (Theron) getting away. The new movie will presumably pick up with the aftermath of that betrayal and see how the team reacts to Dom’s decision.
“I think it’s going to be a real test for all of them,” producer Neal Moritz told EW of the characters’ relationships. “Their friendships have always been unbreakable, but this is definitely going to put it to the test.”
While it’s not yet clear how or why Dom turns on his team, it’s possible that Cipher has something on him that he’s trying to protect them from. It’s also possible that he’s simply fallen under her spell.
“She has this kind of evil genius about her,” Moritz said of Cipher. “She can be very convincing, let’s put it that way.”
In addition to Diesel and Theron, the cast of Fast 9 includes returning stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel and Sung Kang. Newcomers include Cardi B, John Cena and Finn Cole.
Production on Fast 9 began in June 2018 and is expected to continue through November. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 22, 2020.
How long is Fast 9?
Since the release of The Fast and the Furious in 2001, the franchise has become one of Hollywood’s biggest and most successful. Now, with the release of Fast 9 (or F9, as it’s now being called), fans are wondering how long the movie is. So far, there’s no official word from Universal Pictures, but we can make an educated guess based on the running times of the previous eight movies in the series.
The original The Fast and the Furious had a runtime of 106 minutes, while 2 Fast 2 Furious clocked in at 108 minutes. The third movie, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, was the shortest in the series at 103 minutes. From there, the movies started to get longer, with Fast & Furious having a runtime of 107 minutes, Fast Five 111 minutes, Fast & Furious 6 130 minutes, and The Fate of the Furious 149 minutes.
If we assume that Fast 9 will have a similar runtime to The Fate of the Furious, we can expect the movie to be around 150 minutes long. However, it’s possible that the movie could be shorter than that. After all, F9 is supposed to be a “back to basics” entry in the series, so it may not need to be as long as The Fate of the Furious. We’ll just have to wait and see when Universal finally reveals the official runtime for Fast 9.
